The Committee on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples, chaired by Mr Ken Wyatt AM MP of the Western Australia, LP has recommended the following amendment to the Australian constitution and the removal of the word ‘race’ from sections of the constitution. A referendum to ratify this amendment is recommended to be held after the next Federal Election in 2016.

 

The committee has recommended in essence that the following changes be applied:

51A Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples

Recognition that the continent and its islands now known as Australia were first occupied by the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples

Acknowledging the continuing relationship of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples with their traditional lands and waters

Respecting the continuing cultures, languages and heritage of the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Peoples
